Speaker: Dr. Emily Jones, General Internal Medicine specialist at London Health Sciences Centre

Co-Chairs: Anna Szczurko of Siskinds & Hilary Jenkins of McKenzie Lake

We are delighted to welcome Dr. Emily Jones, who will speak about occupational burnout and personal wellbeing for lawyers. During our session, Dr. Jones will discuss:

  • the implications of burnout and wellbeing;
  • the identity of burnout as it relates to lawyers;
  • contributors to burnout within the profession;
  • the degree to which burnout and its effects are prevalent;
  • approaches to resolving burnout at different levels within the field;
  • and strategies to preserve personal wellbeing.

Wellbeing is an increasingly recognized need for lawyers; however, there are considerable challenges addressing the issue. Unlike burnout, wellbeing is not strictly a work-related construct but instead is multifaceted and comprised of personal, social, cultural, and professional domains. By impacting occupational burnout, personal wellbeing may shift in a more positive direction.

Our Speaker:

Dr. Jones is a General Internal Medicine specialist, currently working at London Health Sciences Centre. She obtained her medical degree from the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, completed residency at Western University, and her General Internal Medicine subspecialty training at McMaster University. Dr. Jones has also completed her Masters of Evidence-Based Medicine at the University of Oxford, with a dissertation focused on the scope, nature, and utility of tools and their outcomes used to detect changes in physician wellbeing. She has received further wellbeing training as a Wellbeing Champion in Philadelphia through the American College of Physicians, and is a member of the CSIM Health and Wellbeing Promotion committee.
