Justices Mitchell and Sah will share their invaluable advice, insights, and recommendations with attendees. Danielle and Matthew will share their experience with best courtroom practices and answer questions that attendees may have on approaching specific scenarios. This session will be helpful to Family and Civil litigators as well as any lawyer seeking a refresher on expected practices in the courtroom - both in-person and virtual.

Justice Alissa K. Mitchell, LAJ, Superior Court of Justice

Justice Mitchell obtained a Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) from Wilfrid Laurier University (1990) and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Western Ontario (1992).

Prior to her appointment, Justice Mitchell practised law in London, Ontario for 20 years with two national firms: McCarthy Tétrault LLP (1992-2006) and Miller Thomson LLP (2006-2014) with particular emphasis on commercial insolvency and financial restructuring matters and related litigation.

For many years Justice Mitchell was an occasional instructor and lecturer at the Faculty of Law, University of Western Ontario and an instructor at the Bar Admission Course in London. While in practice, she was a frequent speaker and author/co-author of papers on a range of commercial litigation and insolvency topics.

She was appointed to the Superior Court of Justice on January 30, 2014 and presides in the Southwest Region (London). Effective January 1, 2023, Justice Mitchell assumed the role of Local Administrative Judge for London.

Justice Kiran Sah, LAJ, Superior Court of Justice (Unified Family Court)

Justice Sah earned her Bachelor of Science from Trent University and her Bachelor of Laws from the University of Windsor. 

Prior to her appointment, Justice Sah was a partner at Martens Lingard LLP in St. Catharines, Ontario. 

Justice Sah was appointed to the Superior Court of Justice in September 2020 and presides in the Southwest Region, in the London Unified Family Court. 

Effective January 1, 2023, Justice Sah assumed the role of Local Administrative Judge for the Unified Family Court.  She is a member of Senior Family Judge S. Stevenson’s Provincial Consultation Committee and the Family Law Rules Committee.

Justice Sah has acted as mentor for the CIAJ Summer Student Intern Program and has been a speaker at Middlesex Family Law Association events and a Superior Court of Justice (Ontario) Education Seminar.

Danielle A. Douek, Partner, Lerners LLP

Danielle is a partner at Lerners LLP. She is a passionate advocate with over twelve years of diverse litigation expertise including in health law, personal injury, insurance and the education sector. Danielle has appeared as trial counsel in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice and at the appellate level as well as before various tribunals including the HRTO and HPARB. Danielle frequently represents members of regulatory Colleges in responding to complaints, investigations, quality assurance reviews, and other inquiries.

Matthew Villeneuve, Associate Managing Partner at McKenzie Lake Lawyers LLP

Before joining McKenzie Lake and accepting the role of Practice Group leader of the Family Law Department, Matthew Villeneuve spent many years practicing family law in London, Ontario.  During this time, Matthew worked both as a partner in a full-service law firm and also at a boutique family law firm.  Those opportunities allowed him to expand his knowledge as a family law lawyer and to continue to discover creative solutions to the challenges clients face.

Matthew takes pride in representing his clients with integrity and using his experience to effectively advocate on their behalves in the most efficient forum for their unique situations.  Matthew regularly resolves matters through negotiation, mediation, and the litigation process.  Matthew can assist clients with a wide range of issues particular to their family law concerns.

Named Associate Managing Partner in December 2020, Matthew will work alongside the Managing Partner leading the firm and it’s strategic initiatives.  Prior to becoming a lawyer, Matthew completed an Honours Business Administration degree at the University of Windsor and then continued his studies both at the Institut De Formation Internationale in Rouen, France and the HEAO Arnhem International Business School in the Netherlands.  Matthew’s business background has become an advantage he shares with his clients.

Matthew’s spare time is occupied with hockey, golf and travelling.
